HOW TO SAVE ENERGY WHILE YOU'RE ON HOLIDAY

Are you going away this Summer? You may want to check out our top tips on how to save energy while you’re on holiday.

Switch Off Your Appliances

  • Unplug at the wall: Many of your favourite appliances still use electricity while on standby. For example: televisions, gaming consoles, and microwaves.
  • Turn off tech: While you’re enjoying your holiday, there is no need for your router to still be on using up electricity (unless it powers security cameras or alarms). Similarly, don’t forget about desktop computers and smart speakers.
  • Clear kitchen counters: It’s not just the microwave that needs unplugged. Make sure you disconnect kettles, blenders, coffee machines etc., from their power source.

Manage Your Heating & Hot Water

  • No heating necessary: Unlike in the winter when the threat of pipes freezing looms, you don’t need to keep your heating on when you go on holiday during the Summer.
  • No hot water: With no one there to take a shower or wash their hands, there is no need to keep your hot water schedule or immersion heater active.
  • Activate holiday mode: If you’re in holiday mode then so should your thermostat. Check your app to pause all active schedules until you get back home.

Optimise Your Fridge & Freezer

  • Clear out perishables: Eat or compost any fresh food in your fridge so it does not spoil and cause negative odours. If not you may have to to replace your whole unit.
  • Adjust the temperature: If your fridge is empty it can be turned down to the warmest safe setting. This can reduce energy costs.
  • Extended absence tip: If you are going away for an extended period, we recommend completely emptying the fridge and unplug it. You can even prop the doors open to help prevent mould.
