HOW TO BLEED YOUR RADIATORS
If you are experiencing an issue with your heating at home, then you may need to bleed your radiators. Follow this easy step-by-step guide to learn more.
HOW CAN I TELL IF MY RADIATORS NEED BLEEDING?
Before going any further, it is important to establish if your radiators do in fact need bleeding or if your heating issue can be solved elsewhere. Over time, air can build up within your radiators leading to areas feeling cold. If your radiators are hot at the bottom and cold at the top then you follow the steps below.
WHAT WILL I NEED TO BLEED MY RADIATORS?
Before starting, please ensure you are equipped to tackle this job. You will definitely need your Radiator bleed key or a flat-head screwdriver if your system is more modern. It is also recommended to have a cloth and old towel on hand to clean up any water. You can also utilise any old container to be more efficient.

- To begin, turn on your heating and give your radiators a chance to heat up. Check which radiators in the house are cold at the top to identify which ones need bleeding. Make sure to turn the heating off before proceeding to the next step.
- Identify the valve and insert your radiator bleed key (or screwdriver). Keep your cloth handy to catch any drips or if you need to utilise for a better grip.
- Turn the key anti-clockwise to open the valve. Listen for the hissing sound that signifies air escaping and keep turned until water starts flowing out. Use your container to catch the liquid.
- Return the key to the starting position to close the valve. Clean up any excess water and repeat throughout your other radiators. Once complete, turn your heating back on to check that your radiators are now fully warm.
- We recommend checking your boiler pressure following this process as it may need topped up. If you are looking for advice on how to do this, then browse our easy how to guide.
